Goofs During the opening scenes, Beth Heke is walking past the yard where some men are working out with weights. Jake is unemployed and spends most of the day getting drunk at the local pub with his friends. There he is in his element, buying drinks, singing songs and savagely beating any other patron whom he considers to have stepped out of line hence his nickname 'The Muss'.
He often invites huge crowds of friends back to his home for wild parties. While Jake portrays himself as an easygoing man out for a good time, he has a vicious temper when drinking.
This is highlighted when his wife dares to 'get lippy' at one of his parties and he savagely attacks her in front of their friends.
Nig, the Hekes' eldest son, moves out to join a street gang. He cares about his siblings but despises his father for his thoughtless brutality, a feeling returned by the elder Heke.
Nig attempts to find a substitute family in the form of the gang, but this is unsuccessful as the gang members are either too brutal or, in the case of Nig's gang girlfriend, too beaten down to provide him with the love and support he craves.
The second son, Mark 'Boogie' Heke, has a history of minor criminal offenses and is taken from his family and placed in a borstal.
Grace, the Hekes' thirteen-year-old daughter, loves writing stories as an escape from the brutality of her life. Grace's best friend is a drug-addicted boy named Toot who has been cast out by his parents and lives in a wrecked car.
He is the one who really cares for her. Boogie reassures Toot that Grace loved him, and Beth invites him to live with them.
Reading Grace's diary later that day, Beth finds out about the rape and confronts Bully at the pub. Jake initially threatens Beth for accusing his friend, but Nig steps between them, protecting his mother.
Nig hands his father Grace's diary, and after glancing at it, Jake explodes in a rage, nearly beating Bully to death and castrating him with a broken bottle.
Beth blames Jake just as much as Bully because of his violent lifestyle, and decides to leave him. Jake cusses and yells at her on a curb outside the pub as the family leaves, with police sirens wailing in the background.
Once Were Warriors is the first feature film produced by Communicado Productions. It also became at the time the highest-grossing film in New Zealand, surpassing The Piano The film was shot at a local state house , located at 33 O'Connor Street, Otara , in the Auckland metropolitan area.
The neighbours of the house used for filming complained on numerous occasions due to the film's late night party scenes.
Roger Ebert gave the film three and a half stars out of four and observed: " Once Were Warriors has been praised as an attack on domestic violence and abuse.
So it is. But I am not sure anyone needs to see this film to discover that such brutality is bad. We know that. I value it for two other reasons: its perception in showing the way alcohol triggers sudden personality shifts, and its power in presenting two great performances by Morrison and Owen.
You don't often see acting like this in the movies. They bring the Academy Awards into perspective.

The juvenile detention center separates the youngest son from his only home, but instills in him a pride in his ancestry. And Jake himself is a beast, a man built like a tank who will destroy you with anything available should you spill his beer The film follows Beth as she does her best to hold the family together even while the various problems tear them apart.
At the center is Jake's drinking and further carelessness of his family's dissipation. While Beth's answer is to nurture and aid her children, Jake insists it's best to drink away the problems and quit being so "soft" on the kids.
And we watch, through it all, as the family spirals further apart. Near the end, after seeing both happy and horrible things happen to each of the characters, we are jarred by a terrible tragedy.
Beth and Jake both deal with it uniquely, as she draws once again on the tremendous power of family and human spirit, while Jake deals with it his own way.
The last 15 minutes of the film keep us in suspense as we wonder whether a certain horrible injustice will be confronted, and if so, how.
This scenario involves and encapsulates everyone in the family, and who they are inside. The last few moments of the movie made me want to jump to my feet and applaud.
I won't reveal what happens, but in the last 5 minutes, every person shows so much inner strength that I glow with admiration for their actions.
Especially those of Beth and her oldest son, whose interaction with Jake results in my favorite scene in the movie.
But don't think you know what's going to happen based on this description -it's a complicated scenario. I felt satisfied with the conclusion on all fronts, and thought that each character showed exactly where their strength lies.
Be forewarned that this movie is very heartbreaking. Its overall tone is one of futility, of better lives not received, of wanting the best but never quite getting it.
It is very raw and intense in its portrayal of physical and domestic violence, and the easily upset may have a hard time waiting to see if it ends happily enough for their tastes.
But no matter what your opinion is, it will definitely be a film that stays with you for a long, long time. My highest recommendation.

Once Were Warriors has more to say than the traditional TV-movie about spousal abuse. But some viewers will have to pay a price: This is a movie that requires strength and fortitude to sit through.

David Stratton. One of the finest films ever made on New Zealand soil has lost none of its raw emotional power and unbearable psychological intensity.
