This was my absolute favorite movie when I was a little kid. Then in the 90s and early 's, I couldn't find it anywhere, and would always have such fond memories and desires to rewatch.
I actually bonded with complete strangers a several years ago, after overhearing them talking about this film. I joined their conversation, became friendly, later joined their softball team the Monster Squad of course and eventually became best friends with them all.
This film has had a weirdly great impact on my life, and I cannot wait to share it with others as well. Plus Wolfman's, you know, got nards.
I remember years ago finding this movie at my local supermarket when VHS tapes were all the rage, though I was too young to watch it.
Many years later, I watch it and I smile and smile. Goonies and Ghostbusters thrown in the blender for a perfect cult movie. The kids are all likeable in fact the kids won a Young Artists award for Outstanding Ensemble and well deserved too Sean bringing the charisma, courage, compassion, and charm needed for a leader, Rudy a likeable biker kid with all the smokes, shades, leather jacket, and aura of cool, Phoebe has that sweet innocence for a little girl, and of course Horace a kid some of us can relate too RIP Brent Chalem.
The monsters are all memorable from Dracula played with deliciously evil delight from Duncan Regeher, The Wolfman is cool looking and vicious played wonderfully by Jon Gries who would later be in Napoleon Dynamite , the Mummy and the Gillman are great looking too, but the show stealer is Frankenstein played wonderfully by Tom Noonan, with a similar charm to that of Sloth from the Goonies.
The makeup effects are quite nice courtesy of Stan Winston the same guy who did the makeup for the Terminator movies. There's a nice mixture of laughs and scares throughout and many 80's notions, making all this memorable that you'd want to return to this again and again.
The only negative for this movie is the content isn't all appropriate for the younger mindset see parental advisory below , otherwise this is one for a monster fan or for those who grew up in the 80's, a can't miss!
Parental Advisory: Since this is a horror comedy there's some light scares though nothing nightmare inducing such as a brief flash of lightening that causes Dracula's face to change from flesh to skull for a brief nanosecond.
The Violence, though a little bloody isn't too disturbing ranging from bloody gunshots, staking, impalements, mauling, and head crushing.
The bloodiest moment is where the wolfman is blown up, though this doesn't kill him, he's in bloody parts, and then he gets reassembled.
This is a classic that more and more people are starting to discover but was sadly forgotten and under the radar for far too long.
The sad truth is a movie like this probably would NEVER exist in the super politically correct world we live in today.
This is total 80's movie making at it's finest. A group of children who have their own Monster club end up having to face off against the real Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, Mummy, and Creature from the Black Lagoon.
It may sound like a kids movie but it's not kiddie stuff at all. The best description would probably be Goonies vs.
The kids don't act like squeaky clean, mindless caricatures of what adults want kids to be either. For the most part they speak and act just as kids this age would act and it adds a great realism to the film and makes the kids very easy to relate to.
The Monsters all look incredible. This is before the days of overblown, ridiculous amounts of CGI. Everything is make up here and it looks amazing.
From a great Werewolf transformation, to the Creature from the Black Lagoon and a Mummy that looks a million times better than anything Brenden Frazier ever faced off against, everything looks great.
If you were a child of the 80's and want some nostalgia or if you just want to show your kids something entertaining that is not filled with over the top CGI then this is a movie for you.

I enjoyed the emotional storyline between a mom and daughter on the fringes. The atmosphere is brilliant and you are kept in this dark world until the bitter ending.
I feel the ending wasn't the sharpest but when 90 percent of the film works it's pressure they couldn't maintain.
I really enjoy these indie Canadian films and the characters are deep and well crafted. I hope the creators move onto similar low budget storytelling as they maintain a mood that's missing from modern cinema.
I'm disappointed films like these don't come to the cinemas in my country, this was one of the better horror films I've seen.

Jan 24, Monster movies are like zombie movies, which I talked about the other day in my review of The Rezort, there's either a movie that finds a new and clever angle to use its monster or the movie plays into every monster movie cliche usually associated with the subgenre.
The Host is one of those movies that combines both, it uses a monster to tell character-driven story with some social commentary, but it also plays like a regular monster flick.
It can be enjoyed as popcorn entertainment and, if you look deeper, it can also be enjoyed as something more than that. And, for the past 11 years since its release, The Host has been the benchmark for what a truly excellent monster movie should be.
So where does this movie match up with The Host? It doesn't really even come close, but in some ways it's better than The Host.
And those ways are very simple, I do believe that the movie has a stronger narrative between its lead characters than those in The Host.
There's an inextricable relationship between Kathy and Lizzy. And it almost has to be that way considering that they are mother and daughter, respectively.
The film, while obviously focusing on the monster, explores at length the very troubled relationship between Kathy and Lizzy.
This is revealed through flashbacks that reveal Kathy's trouble with alcoholism and how Lizzy gets the brunt of Kathy's anger whenever she's drunk or wants to go out to get some alcohol.
Because of that, obviously, the movie is a little more serious than one would reasonably expect, but I believe it works because it gives you some perspective on how Kathy and Lizzy got to the point they are in their relationship at the start of the movie.
I do believe there's a mutual hatred between each other. At least from Lizzy's part and, having seen her past, it's not like I would hold it against her.
She's not a pissy kid for no reason whatsoever, her mother has pretty much put her through hell when she had no right to, so I get her hatred of her mother.
But, even with that, there's still a part of Lizzy that holds on to the hope that her mother will rehabilitate herself and will get back on the right path.
This gives the emotional heft. It can get a bit heavy-handed in its approach, but it mostly works due to Zoe Kazan's and Ella Ballentine's performances.
I'm not surprised by Zoe's performance, because she's great. Ella's the one who surprised me the most. I've seen two movies she was in before, but I simply do not remember her in either of them.
Must have been minor roles. But, honestly, she steals the show in this movie. She is excellent. The problem with the film and its narrative is that it gets very weepy.
Because of that, while the film has strong characters that you care about, it all feels very one-dimensional as you only get to see the darker side of the characters and their personalities.
