Ik ben niet een grote fan van de films van Larry Cohen maar Maniac Cop is gewoon goed, ondanks zoals velen hier aangeven het slechte acteerwerk.
Als je een paar Larry Cohen films hebt gezien dan weet je dat het acteerwerk niet super is, met uitzondering van It's Alive. De Blu-ray uitgave van Maniac Cop is top!

Heerlijke film van het zogehete video nasty aangelegenheid. Een simpel verhaal: New York wordt geteisterd door een maniakale agent die gewoonweg plezier heeft in het vermoorden van mensen.
Zo lijkt het. Ik had echter wel goorder verwacht, maar als een horrorfilm met enkele vanoudse actieelementen komt dit erg goed door.
Lustig laat ook zijn overduidelijke liefde voor New York zien en de moorden die in beeld worden gebracht liegen er ook niet om.
En altijd weet deze Maniac Cop er mee weg te komen, waarbij er anderen tot moordenaar worden verdacht Waaronder agent Jack Forrest Typisch jaren Gooi wat elementen wat met psychopaten, psychologische elementjes, brute moorden en eventuele vuurgevechten in de blender en je krijgt voor weinig geld dit cinemaatje voorgeschoteld.
Amusant van begin tot eind en het hoekige acteerwerk valt ook hierdoor niet op. En uiteindelijk is de Maniac Cop zelf ook maar een beschadigde man.
Prima vermaak. Ik miste alleen wel de VHS-sporen. Eigenlijk meer een actiefilm dan slasher of horror en het blijft nogal braaf.
Vooral de eerste 20 minuten zijn aardig waarbij er nog wat mysterie hangt rond de maniakale politieagent. Een verklaring over het waarom krijgen we min of meer, al is het uiteindelijk gewoon weer het aloude wraakverhaaltje.
Het detectivegedeelte was ook nog wel enigszins boeiend, maar eens als het duidelijk is wie de killer is, is het vooral wachten op de ontknoping.
Pakken ze hem of niet? Bruce Campbell ik ben niet erg onder de indruk, ik vind hem maar een houten klaas.
Nogal voorspelbaar einde. Amusant maar toch vrij standaard. Met een wat leukere cast had ik het misschien wel een voldoende gegeven. Matig filmpje. Word door velen als een ware cultklassieker gezien maar is voor mij niet echt weggelegd.
Acteerprestaties beneden nul en verhaal heel cliche en voorspelbaar. Wat ik wel goed vond in het begin enzo dat maniac cop mysterieus is en je niet weet wie hij is.
Ze maken er een redelijke actiehorror van, maar weten Paul Verhoeven's Robocop niet te overtreffen. Maniac Cop will live forever!

At a newsstand, Jack is stabbed through the neck by Cordell, killing him. In order to protect the memory of Commissioner Pike, the corrupt official who originally framed Cordell, the police authority refuse to inform the public of the nature of recent events.
This, along with her belief that Cordell is alive and killing, prompts Theresa to appear on a talk show to inform the public about Cordell.
A traffic cop is murdered by Cordell later when he was towing someone's car. The man who was having his car towed is arrested on suspicion on the cop's murder.
While en route to a hotel in a taxi, Theresa is joined by Susan, and the two are attacked by Cordell, who kills the cabbie and forces Susan and Theresa off the road.
After handcuffing Susan to the steering wheel of a car and sending her into the busy streets, Cordell kills Theresa by snapping her neck.
Gaining control of the car, Susan crashes and is found and given medical attention. Elsewhere, a stripper named Cheryl is attacked in her apartment by Steven Turkell, who has strangled at least six other exotic dancers.
As Turkell brutalizes Cheryl, Cordell arrives, murders the two officers earlier called by Cheryl, and helps Turkell escape.
Grateful for the help, Turkell befriends Cordell and takes him back to his apartment, where Cordell stays for a short while.
After Cordell leaves, Turkell goes out to find another victim but is identified at a strip club by Cheryl. Turkell taunts Susan, telling him Cordell will break him out.
Turkell's assumption proves correct, as Cordell breaks into the police station and murders a total of nineteen police officers and frees Turkell and several unnamed convicts.
Using Susan as a hostage, Turkell, Cordell, and another criminal named Joseph Blum hijack a prison bus and head to Sing Sing, where Turkell believes Cordell wants to free all the inmates and create an army of criminals.
McKinney and Doyle follow, and McKinney convinces Doyle to reopen Cordell's case and rebury his casket with full honors on the assumption that this will appease Cordell.
Cordell bluffs his way into the prison using Blum's paperwork, and he kills a guard for his keys. Shortly after entering death row, Cordell is contacted over the prison PA system by Doyle, who admits to Cordell that he was set up and states that his case has been reopened.
After hearing Doyle's announcement, Cordell abandons Turkell, Blum, and Susan and heads deeper into the prison, where he is attacked with a Molotov cocktail by the three inmates who originally mutilated him.
While burning, Cordell finally gets revenge by killing the three convicts who mutilated him, only to be attacked by Turkell, who realizes Cordell used him.
As Cordell and Turkell fight, the two crash through a wall, fall onto the bus below, and seemingly die when the vehicle explodes.
Sometime later, Cordell is buried with full honors alongside other fallen officers; Susan and McKinney attend his funeral.
As Cordell's casket is lowered, McKinney throws Cordell's badge into the grave, leaves with Susan, and delivers a monologue about how there is a little bit of Cordell in every officer, and that every member of the force needs to know that justice and pressure are the only differences between a cop and a Maniac Cop.
Then the camera slowly and eerily pans toward Cordell's casket, and suddenly, Cordell's hand unexpectedly bursts through the lid of his casket and quickly grabs his badge, as the screen cuts to black, and the credits roll.

Maniac Cop still is a cult film today. I seriously love this action Horror film. Specially Robert Z'Dar who plays Maniac Cop, a murderous ex-cop who returns from the dead, chased by his former co-workers did a terrific job one of his best roles I have ever saw.
I love the sequels but for me this one is the best in the series. The acting in this film is pretty decent good for a 80's slasher horror flick. Campbell is one of the few actors that can make even the worst of films watchable, and makes any good film like this that much better.
He was also the main star of the underrated Halloween 3 Season Of The Witch, a film that would probably be quite well liked if they had left Halloween out of the title.
Robert Z'Dar who looks like a real life Quagmire from Family Guy, is a huge man and is very effective as the supernatural Matt Cordell. I really miss the 80's because back than they had much better action horror slasher films.
