Ingmar was possibly trying to communicate that he understood Erik, though the name of the character, Ericsson son of Erik , may indicate the character represents Ingmar more than his father.

The Ekdahl apartment, for example, is almost an exact copy of Bergman's grandmother's apartment in Uppsala. And the similarity of Alexander to the young Bergman, accentuated by the actor Bertil Guve's almost uncanny physical resemblance to the director as a child, is beyond doubt.

His pastimes the puppet theatre and the magic lantern are identical with those of Bergman himself. Many of the other characters also reflect Bergman's childhood.

The grandmother and matriarch Helena Ekdahl is in essence an affectionate portrait of Bergman's own beloved grandmother.

The nanny Maj bears a more than passing resemblance to Bergman's own nanny Mait. And so on. However, Bergman has stated that: 'there is more of me in the bishop than in Alexander, he is afflicted by his own demons.

A minor character, for example, is one Mikael Bergman, described in the screenplay as 'young, promising, plays Hamlet'. Here, the director clearly appears to have sneaked in yet another alter ego.

As the enfant terrible of Swedish theatre in the s, Bergman was often described as 'young and promising', and at the outset of his career he was known to try his hand as an actor.

Admittedly, he never played Hamlet, but he did play Duncan in his own production of Macbeth in When a journalist asked Bergman if this was a conscious reference, he confirmed that it was, adding 'but I didn't think anyone would notice!

Five years after the tax wrangle which caused him to leave Sweden he is planning his biggest ever production.

Production costs: 35 million Swedish kronor. No news had yet been issued about the casting, so one can assume that the journalists had indulged in a spot of qualified guesswork.

But of the actors they tipped, only Josephson actually played in the film, and then only in a minor role. And nobody at the time had any idea that production costs would exceed the figure that Expressen announced.

It was to go on longer than any other of Bergman's films. Things got off to a good start, but then a series of catastrophes struck.

On another occasion the chief electrician broke both his legs. The makeup artist suffered a back injury and was unable to work.

A stuntman caught on fire. And then came the influenza outbreak: it knocked out half the crew, director and cinematographer included! Yet the shooting schedule had to be met, so the crew carried on with assistant director Peter Schildt and the cinematographer Tony Forsberg, a man who, according to Bergman was "underrated but first class".

One of the scenes shot in the director's absence was the funeral of Oscar Ekdahl. Bergman, who had left detailed instructions, was pleased with the result.

Universally hailed as an expert at getting the best out of a cast, Bergman has, along with W. Fields, admitted to having problems working with two types of actors, children and animals: 'they don't do what you say'.

Yet Pernilla Allwin and Bertil Guve handled the title roles in exemplary fashion. Guve, a 'complete rascal' according to Bergman, had landed the role as Alexander thanks in no small measure to the fact that during the screen tests, when all the young hopefuls were asked to come up with something terrible that they had done, he had extravagantly claimed that: 'I murdered my grandfather!

One of them, at least, found it hard to accept direction. Outside the bishop's house, a large black cat was supposed to stand guard.

But when she was refused time off school, the director scrapped the role entirely. However, no fewer than three of Bergman's other children did take part in the film.

His sister Anna , the model and actress, took the small part of Hanna Schwartz. In his own opinion, it was the biggest ever mistake of von Sydow's career.

In his role as the hearty Gustaf Adolf Ekdahl, Kulle was in his element. So much so that many reviews considered it the best role of his career.

From Fanny and Alexander onwards, their relationship grew closer. He managed in the end, and his role, though small, seems a fitting end to a long and shared professional career: 'My partnership with Gunnar,' Bergman has remarked, 'was one of the great experiences of my life.

She was especially appreciative of Bergman's commitment: every fabric sample was test filmed since they can appear differently on the screen from in the hand, and the director never tired of viewing all the small clips of film.

On the contrary, he got angry when they neglected to show him Emilie's dressing gown. A further testament to Bergman's eye for detail during the shoot came when one of the props assistants produced an antique breakfast cup.

Bergman praised this initiative with an enthusiastic exclamation: 'Yes, it's very classy, very dramatic too, bloody stylish! Yet nobody seems to recall the event with anything other than pleasure.

Some fascinating insights into the filming can be gleaned from Bergman's small and carefully dated notes on a number of pages of the screenplay.

They represent his potted version of the film shoot, its triumphs and setbacks:. God, let me not lose my joy. Now I really yearn to stand protected by benign powers, if I am to complete my task.

Suddenly start to feel as if I'm coming down with an infection. Relentless and total anguish. How can I protect myself from this horror!

About what it is being Swedish. All in the opinion of Ingmar Bergman, of course. But there sure is something in the core of this that makes us Swedes see ourselves.

Not in the story itself, but in values and tone. More so than in any other Bergman film, perhaps. You could say it's the Dalahäst Delacarlian horse of films.

A film that is shown on Swedish television around the holidays and is packed with loved actors. Like Allan Edwall who even the smallest child recognize because of his many roles in Astrid Lindgren films , upcoming actors and a few that we've gotten used to see in Bergman's earlier films.

Otherwordly potency is Bergman's main vehicle of his last true outstanding celluloid triumph, pushing the boundaries dividing the realms of reality, fantasy, dreams and magic, imagination and faith, loss of hope and disillusion.

Reality, as said, is broken and shattered, and it is in such state in which it acquires a deeper meaning, and therefore feels more real.

Patterns emerge everywhere according to our interpretation of circumstances; the eyes are the windows to the soul. Fanny och Alexander was subject to a very surprising international response, including 4 Academy Awards, one of their few correct decisions.

Fear not, because this time the golden statuettes do not signify the Swedish auteur's quality decay, even if there are at least 10 other films of his that are better than this one.

Fanny and Alexander beautifully recreates early-twentieth-century Swedish life in a naturalistic manner reminiscent of an August Strindberg drama.

Whether depicting the lavish mansion of a wealthy family, the austere lifestyle of a stern bishop, or the magical wonders of a Jewish antiques shop, the set decoration is some of the best I've ever seen.

The visuals are gorgeous, and the acting is superb all-around. The story presents a family drama that is both universal in its emotional dynamics yet peculiarly to its time and place.

When supernatural matters started to enter the scene, it was fine as long as they obeyed some semblance of interior logic. About three quarters of the way through, however, it starts to get a little….

The most beautifully shot, blocked and composed of all the movies I've seen of his so far. Wonderous, dark, fantastical, sincere, cruel and loving.

Expectations I had at the start were played with and thrown back at you. So smart. It is quickly becoming very evident to me that Ingmar Bergman is one of the greatest directors of all time.

Thanks to the cinematography and set design of the film, one becomes immersed in a world rich with depth and warmth, one such film wherein the idiom "every frame a painting" is appropriate to.

The first colour film I've seen from Bergman, and from what I am aware one of his few, it seemed appropriate for the childish wonder Bergman is trying to put is in the perspective on, unbridled by the good-or-bad, black-and-white of his earlier films, as….

Beautiful cinematography and everything visual on this film A villain so great, I hated him from the moment he appeared on screen, and the actor performance just made it better As with most Bergman films, there were moments when the story was pretty slow and I was falling asleep, but thanks to watching the tv series version there was enough pauses to avoid that Still it's 5 hours.

Slow start but the real story and family here is so charming you get into it by the time the good stuff starts. An autoethnographic ghost fairy tale, could be the subtitle.

The Brothers Grimm meets Dickens meets Shakespeare? All beautifully photographed, of course. So why not the perfect score? Let's just say it - three hours is too long for a movie.

I will not be taking any questions, thankyou.
