And why would he leave his children alone with this man he has only known for a few days when he has to take his wife to the hospital?
Question: Why does the cellar periodically become a swamp? This is dry prairie-type farm country. Not a swamp in sight.
It would make sense if the people who became ghosts were drowned, but that does not appear to be the case. There is absolutely no reason nor explanation for a swamp in the middle of a cellar that has a wooden floor.
If it had a dirt floor - maybe. Even then, it strains credulity. Absolutely the only reason I can find to watch this movie is if you are fans of any or all of the above-mentioned actors.
Certainly not for the story. The story is about Jess and the things she sees and experiences. Kristen Stewart plays that role and carries the story pretty well.
The very beginning was tense and scary, then for the next several minutes we only get jump-scares. The little boy is seeing something spooky. The movie is watchable, but there are so many plot holes and questions that it would take several pages to list them all.
What Chicagoan, Chicago being such a safe, friendly city, would throw his house open to a complete stranger upon first meeting and give him access to the wife and children?
Why do only the kids, specifically Jess, get terrorized by the ghosts? All in all, three stars is generous. It isn't the worst horror movie that I've ever seen, but it's somewhere on the list.
There is a story here, it just doesn't get told with any real fervor. Kristen Stewart's constantly breathy attitude wears on me, at least.
Not only that, but there seems to be a lot of backstory that the writer just didn't go into. It felt like there could have been a lot more fleshing out of that to make the movie feel more like a story and less like a series of unrelated clips.
At one point towards the end, it really feels like they were starting to run out of money and said, "Welp, I guess we'd better wrap this up.
Time for a poorly-executed plot twist? Why not? The visual effects were good and the acting by the more senior cast was pretty good, so there is that.

I was looking forward to watching this film after seeing the trailer, it looked to be a good horror film, but whilst it was a good film, it wasn't at all scary.
The acting, in my opinion was very good, the plot could have been better, there were some aspects of the film i have seen many times before in other horror films, so nothing fresh was brought to the table.
The ending was lame, with a lack lustre 'twist' which has also all been done before. All in all I wouldn't bother watching this film again.
I found it wasn't scary- at all! I didn't understand why the ghosts inside the house were attacking the family either, a bit of a mystery for me!
It's OK to watch, just don't expect to be scared! Quite a good film, though I must say, I had it pretty much sussed fairly quickly.
Not a fan of weird, grudge-esque kids, so that was a bit of a let down but aside from that little bit that could have been done much better, I enjoyed it.
When her family moves out to the sticks, the leading lady played by Kristen Stewart been a while since I watch eit, cant remember name notices weird goings on in the house, as she struggles to adjust to the move out there.
Her toddler brother, who hasnt spoken since she did something seemingly unforgivable, keeps seeing thigns that the adults cant,and also gets out of his cot mysteriously, as well as a number of other weird things that happen.
As the house starts to attack the people living there, we see Kristen trying to overcome the supernatural singlehandedly her new boyfriend does come to the rescue a bit.
There's hidden secrets all over the place in this film, and thats what makes it interesting. One person found this helpful.
Compelling and super scary ghost story. Real shivers-down-the-back-of-the-neck stuff. Kristen Stewart plays one of the troubled teens who were her stock in trade at this period, and does so with her usual skill in engaging the viewer's empathy.
Then the supernatural events start. There are plenty of borrowings from other films including Hitchcock's 'The Birds' , all used to ratchet up the tension.
A very skillful piece of cinema. A film that starts very well, and deepen you in the mysterious and dark corner of the house, but then it turns into a kind of moral tale about ghosts taking revenge, with too many revelation while it would have worked better with something left unexplained.
It is what usually happens nowadays with horror. Totally predictable horror romp that is however well acted, directed and designed with a fantastically immersive soundtrack.
However it really is re-treading tired old ground. The blu ray transfer is superb and both audio and video are of reference quality.
